On some bosses, like the first one, I can run around dodging bombs while my friend stands shooting. On the second boss, evasion is very important so I constantly shoot and let my friend rest his gun more. Other nice abilities include being able to throw each other at enemies to inflict damage.
The shooter stage gives you even more co-operation with one lad controlling the ships and the other firing. All configuration alternatives with weapons and difficulty settings gives Gunstar Heroes an eternal longevity and not only a place in the co-op hall of fame, but also on the top list of the best Mega Drive games of all time. If the skills between two players are unbalanced, playing as two in Sonic 2 is perfect. A beginner can begin trying out playing as the fox with unlimited lives and help out the blue hedgehog when needed.
Or the roles can just be switched. Take for example the bonus levels. The first ones are a piece of cake, but later on there comes one where you practically almost have to be two. First of all, the rings come at two sides much of the time, and it is impossible clean both with only one player.
Second of all, the AI of Tails is so dumb, so you hopefully have someone who has the reflexes to avoid the numerous bombs coming. Since Sonic 2 was my first Mega Drive game, I had lots of good play time with my brother. Thanks to Tails, we could play this game as two, and getting help with all those boss fights was really needed back then. Especially at the last one in Metropolis Zone, where keeping the rings was really hard without that masochistic furball.
The Sonic franchise may have been created with single player gameplay in mind, but the co-op functions incorporated into the sequels suited very well, especially for new players of the console. They are so few you can count the co-op ones on both your hands yes, you can believe me.
But here is at least one of them, and it is impossible to beat if you are playing by yourself. In Star Wars Arcade the graphics are lagging worse than Super-FX games and you see your enemies milliseconds before their fire is in your face. To add insult to injury, the whole gameplay feels like you are one old, overweight Triceratops getting attacked by dozens of hungry Velociraptors. That is why you need an extra head on that threehorned dino! Because that doubles your fire power, one guy pilots the ship and shoots, while the other only aims and shoots.
Getting rid of one task is a gift from heaven, as it is literally impossible to shoot down ships at the left and turn right to avoid fire right after, when there are — uh, two frames per second? So if you want some Star Wars on your Mega Drive, have it with a friend, if at all. I could never beat that Super Star Destroyer myself after gazillions of tries, but with my brother we succeeded soon. Of course, a second player who plays as Tails only becomes handy when hitting end bosses or to fly Sonic across gaps or get to missed bonuses on hard to reach platforms.
But when playing Sonic I get the main enjoyment in getting the second player frustrated by running Tails out of the screen and seeing the little fox fall on spikes, get hit by enemies or get crushed between moving blocks.
A long time ago, I rented a game called Streets of Rage 3. Then, the next time I rented a game, it was Streets of Rage 3. Then it happened again. Then again It happened me as well! I never bought the game, but me and my brother would play the hell out of the first half of that game.
The first half until we hit the damn snowplow that damages you when you attack it WTF?! So we were Streets of Rage-less for a good three years. He then handed me a copy of Sonic Spinball , and a complete copy of Streets of Rage ……… 2! I pop it in, pick Max right away, while he picked Skate, mostly because the horrible Nicktoon Rocket Power was somewhat popular at the time.
When we started, we knew that this would be something that would be done a lot… us actually sitting down and playing something together!
Streets of Rage 2 is called overall the best of the series, and it deserves the calling! There I said it! Overall, when you and your partner are trading punches with the Donovans and Galsias of the world, it creates an overall feeling of just plain fun!
This created another strategy in the game, where you could have more specials, you also lost life whenever it was used. Not to sound like a total wuss, but the overall factor of SOR 2 being an easier game overall does help. Thank any sort of religious figure you may follow for the Virtual Console!
I think this game is really the only game I had that was both fun and realistically possible to beat with a buddy. T2: The Arcade Game is my favorite game to play coop with a buddy, because I can tell him EXACTLY what to do and then we work as a team to beat those impossible levels where you have to save the trucks.
Those are nearly impossible if you are playing by yourself, and even with another player beside you, strategy is necessary to defeat the machines. I have never encountered another game on the Genesis that I have had more fun playing with a friend, even though the Lethal Enforcers games come close. The true strategy in this game is what makes it the most fun game to play alongside your friend, in my opinion, simply because it puts you in command of destroying things in a certain order and it also helps prevent damage that you would not be able to defend yourself from in the single player mode.
My friend and I sat through and beat this game in about an hour so. It is not the longest game in the world, but if you put it on the hardest difficulty it will take you three or four times to get to and to defeat the T in the steel mill.
The controls are simple enough for first time players A tip-toes or uses whatever item you currently have, B brings up the present screen, and C shows the map. Panic on Funkotron is unduly maligned for adopting the standard side-scrolling presentation, and many fans of the original allowed their disgust to blind them from the brilliance of experiencing this more fleshed out version of Funkotron.
Funkotron is truly alive, full of funky homes, psychedelic flower fields, and its own hell. That's all nested in one of the best feeling shooters on PC. Destiny 2 has dozens of hours of co-op shooting within, from brainless fun to challenging endgame encounters. That's more than enough fun to squeeze out before the Eververse even becomes a concern. Overcooked is chaos incarnate. Overcooked 2 shares the same penchant for destroying relationships, but before you hate each other, you'll love playing this game together.
The sequel adds new maps and new complexity. You can play multiplayer locally or online. Now you can make sushi, and there's teleportation involved. Just like your standard kitchen, really. Release Date: Players: Link: Steam. But Warframe shines as a co-op action game , creating the perfect digital space to hang out with your buddies while tearing through hordes of baddies. You can lose yourself in upgrade planning and crafting component wikis until the sun comes up.
You can all play at your own pace, and then cross paths in a Grineer spaceship from time to time. Release date: Developer: Link: Humble. Cuphead doesn't become a breeze just because a friend can have your back in co-op. Crowding the luscious animations with another body and even more bullets complicates this side-scrolling arcade shooter, you see, making the two-player option a challenge for only the absolute ironclad best of friends.
But in the same way your brain and hands meld into a higher power after enough failure, and gradual pattern recognition hardens into pure instinct, bridging that rapt attention between two brains is a mild telepathy.
Friend telepathy for the purposes of finishing a cartoon game. Release date : Players : Link : Steam. Klei fought shy of adding co-op to its brilliant game of goth survival whimsy for a couple of years, reasoning not unreasonably that the addition of other people might break its esoteric spell, which relies on feelings of isolation and discovery.
The mutual blame when a Deerclops stomps through your camp, ruining days worth of winter prep, is a strategy game in itself. Chilling out on Discord or a Skype call with a friend whilst pooling your resources to try to keep each other alive against the increasingly brutal effects of the seasons. Release date : Players : Up to 32 Link : Steam.
Download an assortment of weird maps, hop in Discord with five or six of your buddies, and lose yourself in hours of retro-weirdness, laughter, and awkward platforming. Release date: Players: Link: Microsoft Store. Forza Horizon 4 takes the good times of co-op racing in Horizon 3 and rolls with them, switching locations to the UK and making seasonal weather and track changes a big part of the experience.
As we wrote in our review , "the racing remains peerless. It's a perfect blend of forgiving arcade handling with an obsessive attention to detail that ensures each car feels just different enough.
It's not aiming to be a perfect simulation, but the weight, speed and torque of each vehicle give it a personality beyond class and category. Amplitude made its name with 4X strategy games Endless Space and Endless Legend, but their most creative and original game is the beautiful and a bit bizarre Dungeon of the Endless.
Every concept is familiar on its own, but twisted just slightly. Time only progresses when you open doors in the dungeon. Finishing a level requires picking up the crystal and making a mad dash for the exit as enemies swarm in from all sides. Roguelikes, tower defense, and co-op RPGs seem like impossible bedfellows, and yet here we are.
Killing Floor 2 is the shooter you play when you just want to shoot the baddies, lots of baddies, and you want it to look and feel absolutely sick. It works because the weapon animations and gun feel are second to none, and Tripwire has spent years refining each class's abilities and weapons, so ascending through the ranks to unlock new perks on the skill tree is as satisfying as learning the maps and deciding which weapons to spend your cash on each round.
Tripwire also does great seasonal events, and there are tons of weird, cool custom maps out there, too, like 3D recreations of Pokemon towns. Our favorite thing about Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes is all the paperwork.
Wait, wait! Come back! KTNB is a game about that scene in every action movie where the hero has to defuse a bomb, and the nerd on the phone asks him: What do you see? The defusing player can take a laptop to one side of the couch, and the advisers open up their bomb hardware manuals on the other. Communication is critical and any number of players can advise the bomb technician, making this a fantastic party game.
Four players team up to conquer a series of story-like missions that involve each team member performing a different role building up to a bigger heist. When all four players come together in the finale of each heist, making a dramatic escape from the cops as a collective is incredibly exciting and rewarding—more so than anything found in the main story.
If only Rockstar would make more of them. Release Date: Players: 2 Link: Steam. Portal 2 , one of the most critically acclaimed games of the last six years, is on a best-of list? What a shock! There's no denying the raw quality of Portal 2's distinct co-op campaign, though. As the two testing robots Atlas and P-Body, you and a friend get to explore the darker, more dangerous side of GlaDOS's testing routines—the stuff that's too dangerous for non-protagonist human testers.
The three-dimensional spatial thinking that makes the Portal series so addictive is only magnified when there's another friend getting stumped at the puzzles with you.
Portal 2's co-op is strongest when neither of you know the answer: if your partner waits patiently for you, you feel like a moron; if they don't, they'll be rushing you through all the discovery that makes the game great.
Relentless action set pieces, tight cover-based shooting mechanics, and fun. Gears 5 offers everything past Gears games have had but also adds one of the most interesting stories in franchise history.
You can play this game co-op with up to three players. Couch Co-op is an option as well as online play. The third player takes the role of Jack, a robotic sidekick to the two main characters of the game. Gears 5 also features the classic, franchise-defining horde multiplayer mode. Where you and a group of other players work together to survive waves of increasingly difficult enemies. Looting and shooting have never felt as good as they do in Borderlands 3. This game is a first-person shooter all about mowing down thousands of bandits, robots, and all-around bad people in the name of fun and collecting weapons.
There are literally millions of guns to be found all with their own variations and attributes. The story is a wacky one. Full of overt humor and lots of ridiculous gags. If you like a goofy story and come into it just looking to have fun, it should be a good time. If you want a game with a more serious approach to the adventure then the story may not be one for you. The game supports up to four players in co-op through online play and you can play couch co-op via split-screen with two players.
Clocking in at about hours total with future content packs coming down the pipeline, Borderlands 3 is an action-packed cooperative blast you can experience for a good while. Type of Co-op: Local with Online coming in the future. Here is an interesting one that took me by surprise. Children of Morta, is a Diablo-like dungeon-crawling rogue-lite action-adventure game.
The core gameplay loop is exploring small dungeons, killing enemies, looting, and leveling up. What makes this game great is that the gameplay is addicting and fun and the story is presented in an interesting way as well. You play as various members of the Bergson family, each with their own play style and unique abilities. As you play through the game you unlock more members and upgrade them. If you have a friend in mind that you know would enjoy an epic, in-depth adventure with you, then look no further, Divinity Original Sin is your answer.
Divinity I only features two-player co-op while Divinity II allows up to four players to play together. These games offer a decent challenge and will require you to put your thinking hat on every now and then. A perfect cooperative series for gamers who are looking for a rich, engrossing challenge and adventure. Something you can play with a friend over weeks or months. You are basically playing your favorite hardcore RPG with friends. An incredible feat from Larian studios and a game series that does not get championed loudly enough.
Both games are fantastic. The first one is a bit easier to get into and learn as it has some slightly less complicated mechanics. The second game builds on everything the excellent first game delivered and expands upon it. Now here is a game that came out of nowhere and is an excellent surprise. Deep Rock Galactic brings together the fun of digging through mines in Minecraft and combines it with the frenetic action of a survival shooter like World War Z.
This is a unique genre cocktail that is two parts very chill and one part hectic. Playing this game with a friend will primarily consist of exploring new areas to mine and finding particular precious minerals that you have to collect on your mission. When things heat up and you have to fight off waves of enemies, it can get messy but you will develop strategies to deal with them, and the waves generally only last for a shorter period of time.
This game is also pretty kid-friendly, everything you shoot is some kind of bug or monster and the art style is pretty cartoony. Deep Rock Galactic would make for a pretty great family co-op experience but currently, there is no local co-op so you would have to have the ability to play it on two different screens and platforms. Do you think you would enjoy hacking up ninjas, demons, and monsters? How about doing so as a cocky over-the-top frequently inappropriate protagonist? Shadow Warrior 2 offers all of that with a very healthy amount of humor and cheese to go along with it.
Shadow Warrior 2 picks up where the first Shadow Warrior left off but actually takes an interesting turn. While the first game was a straightforward, linear, single-player story campaign, Shadow Warrior 2 is an open-ended campaign. You revisit several hub areas and locations and you pick and choose which missions you want to tackle and when. Shadow Warrior 2 also introduces loot, you can find new weapons and upgrades for your abilities.
Much of it is randomly generated so somewhat like Borderlands, you never know what you will get when you play through a mission. The game is really funny, another hallmark example of why I love AA games, and the gameplay is great. They manage to capture that frenetic pace and satisfying action you feel in a game like Doom. Both Ghost Recon Wildlands and Breakpoint offer up some of the best tactical action gameplay you can have with a friend.
Wildlands came out first and Breakpoint is the sequel which just released in late The reason I have both games on here is that much like Divinity , these games are similar enough that they both offer the same level of quality cooperative play. They can be played with up to four players online but there is no split-screen couch co-op local multiplayer. You can attack the game however you want, you decide which missions to take and you slowly work to dismantle an elaborate network of baddies.
What makes these games so entertaining is that you are playing in a giant sandbox open world. You can choose to fly into a mission with a helicopter, you can skydive into an area via plane, or just drive through and annihilate everything with a tank.
You can go in quiet, meticulously planning your assault and execute it under the cover of darkness, you can run in guns blazing John Rambo style. The way you approach the game is totally up to you and the unpredictability of what can happen in the open-world setting will keep you and your friends on their toes. Breakpoint adds in a degree of randomized loot so if you enjoy that aspect of games, you can find it there.
Wildlands is pretty much a polished, totally finished product at this point so if you jump into that one first, by the time you and your pals are ready for Breakpoint it should be even better. Type of Co-op: Online and Local up to six players online. In DST , you and a friend start with little to nothing and you have to work together to forge for resources and craft items. Not only do you have to not starve, but you also have to keep your character from going insane by keeping them feeling safe and comfortable.
Building your way up through crafting and experience allows the players over time to get better at surviving. There are multiple characters to play with their own abilities and sometimes items. You may want to check out some walk-throughs or strategy guides online to get some basic tips.
This is a pretty unique title and an interesting time to play with pals. Check this one out if you are looking for a more unique cooperative play experience. Type of Co-op: Local and Online up to four player in a crew. Have you ever wanted to sail the seas with good grog and even better company? Take on adrenaline-filled pirate battles and go on arduous treasure hunts where peril could await you at every turn?
Although the game has a cartoony look, is filled with humor, and is kid-friendly, Sea of Thieves can become as intense as most other online games depending on the situation.
